May - Black Belt Success in Coventry

On Saturday 24th May a group of 11 Black belt hopefuls from Jamie Woodlands Black Belt Academy made the journey to the Midlands to test for the coveted black belt. As the name of the club suggests the training students receive is intended to enable everyone to make this achievement one day.The group in question had all trained hard for many years in the quest to achieve what is seen by many as the height of martial arts excellence.

As a club which looks to train martial arts at the highest level, students are put through their paces in order to succeed. Each individual has their own reasons for training whether that is to lose weight and tone, to compete, to learn self defence skills or just for enjoyment and at the academy instructors’ work to make sure everyone achieves their goals along the way. When the time comes to take the black belt, every student will have improved themselves in all aspects of the martial arts and will be physically and mentally ready to take what is a gruelling and memorable test

To take the belt test all 10 of the students had to complete a separate fitness test which included a timed mile run followed by 100 push ups, sit ups and squat thrusts, then 10 rounds of kickboxing on the heavy bags. With world champion Mark Junday watching and pushing students all the way, no one can take it easy at this point.

Having passed this section the students return to demonstrate the techniques they have acquired over the previous years together with self defence skills, set routines, sparring, weapons, power testing and more physical testing over a 4 hour period.

Mr Junday and Mr Woodland say of the black belt test:

“Yes the test is physically quite tough but all students are tested as individuals in the sense that maybe an older student can’t kick quite as high as a junior but the improvement they make within themselves and the determination they show is what will be rewarded. In these times when many things can be achieved relatively easy with little or no hard work, our black belts serve as a true test of an individual’s determination, focus, perseverance and truly hard work.Well done to all who achieved this”

Having passed successfully the 10 students now take the number of successful black belt and higher Dan passes from the last 3 years to the 40 mark proving the standard of everyone who trains at the academy.

April - Weston-Super - Mare Open Kickboxing Championships

Sunday 27th April saw 26 martial artists from Jamie woodlands black belt academy travel to Weston super mare for the Somerset open kickboxing championships. For many students this was to be their first outing on the tournament scene. As predominantly a Taekwondo club that does also train in kickboxing, the tournament was always going to be a challenge for all involved with tough competition, different rules and a whole range of different clubs bringing a wide range of styles and skills to the arena.

The youngest of the juniors were up on the day in patterns divisions. Patterns are set movements that students perform to improve power, technique, accuracy and grace of movement. In this category students took the top three places with fantastic performances from Thomas Wiltshire (1st), Sol Thompson (2nd), and Cameron Glendinning (3rd).
In the adult section of patterns, students from the academy took the top two places with Daniel Woodland winning and Becky Lynch second.

After the forms the sparring divisions began. Sparring for the students is intended as the closest way of developing the self defence side of the art combined with speed, quick reactions, footwork and body movement. This side of the sport should be seen as a way of intelligently outwitting an opponent using superior technique and skill and not as the fighting side.

The medal haul continued in the sparring categories with wins coming in numerous sections that had been divided by weight or height and also skill level.
The academy’s medal tally went up to over 20 after sparring with wins for many of the academy’s students.

Jamie Woodland said of the overall outcome on the day “I am overwhelmed by the outstanding achievement of everyone who took part in the competition. What impressed me was both the amount of wins in all categories showing the high standard of everyone at the club but also the students who although didn’t come away with medals, showed true spirit and courage within their categories against strong opposition and made everyone very proud of them.
